How the Thermette Works
The Thermette’s ingenious double-walled copper design surrounds the water chamber with heat from a small fire at its base. The chimney creates a natural draw, pulling the flames upward and rapidly heating the water.
Simply add a few dry twigs, light the fire, and you’ll soon have boiling water for hot drinks or cooking. Fit the included stainless steel cooking ring to transform your Thermette into a compact outdoor stove for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
A True Kiwi Icon
Invented by John Ashley Hart in Auckland, the Thermette was patented in 1931 and quickly earned a reputation as one of New Zealand’s most ingenious outdoor inventions.
During the Second World War it became standard equipment for New Zealand Army personnel, who affectionately nicknamed it the “Benghazi Boiler” because of its reliability in harsh desert conditions.
Today, the Thermette continues to be used by the New Zealand Defence Force during training and field exercises, while outdoor enthusiasts around the world value its simplicity, reliability and timeless design.
Since launching online in 2014, Wilson & Co has proudly supplied thousands of Thermettes throughout New Zealand and internationally.
Create New Memories
For generations, Kiwis have fond memories of camping holidays, beach picnics and family road trips where the Thermette was always ready to boil the billy.
Today, those traditions continue as families create new adventures around the warmth of a fresh hot cuppa in the great outdoors.
Pair your Thermette with one of our Wilson & Co wicker picnic baskets for the perfect outdoor companion.
